Great Earth Walk, Saturday May 1, 2004

The Great Earth Walk, an exciting, new event to promote environmental education in California, will take place from 8 am to 11 am on Saturday, May 1. It is expected to draw from 25,000 to 50,000 people throughout the State, all walking to raise money for participating non-profits. Upper Newport Bay will be the primary walk site in Orange County. In addition to hosting, we are also participating in the walk with ten other local environmental organizations.  We urge you to register to walk on our behalf and raise money for our restoration and education work here at the Bay.

Shuttle bus service will be provided from the Interpretive Center to Shellmaker Island via the Friends Lookout for those who want to walk/ride to Shellmaker, enjoy Estuary Awareness Day and ride back. See links on left for Walk Map and Walk Timetable.

There is no registration fee to walk. Pledging is done based on participation alone, not on the number of miles walked. Several 3-mile and longer walks have been identified at different locations around the Bay, but there is no requirement that this distance is walked. So you can make this a family walk. Also, the organizers have decided to allow walkers who are not free on the morning of May 1 to follow the honor system and walk any day the preceding or following week. unber.jpg (17427 bytes)

For those who have not been down the Bay for a while, use this chance to re-acquaint yourself with its beauty. And when you are done with the walk, stay and enjoy Estuary Awareness Day as a post-walk celebration. Have your family meet you on Shellmaker Island for lunch. We will be offering a variety of fare ranging from hotdogs and hamburgers to health foods at our "Food Court".
