Our walking tours and campfires provide a variety of ways for the public to learn about Upper Newport Bay and experience the sights and sounds of nature. For links to walking tours and other activities within our watershed, visit irvineranchlandreserve.org/activities

Big Canyon and Back Bay Drive Nature Walks

Join a Naturalist at Big Canyon for a walk that takes you through several habitats and gives you an opportunity to experience the diversity of plants and wildlife at the Bay. Winter dates are:

Saturday Dec. 20, Jan. 17 and Feb. 21

Join a Naturalist at Shellmaker Island for a walk along Bay Back Drive. Dates are:

Saturday Dec. 6, Jan. 3 and Feb. 7

Above walks start at 9:00am and last about 2 hours. They are free and no reservations are required. Bring sun protection and binoculars if you have them. Please call (949) 923- 2269 for meeting point and more information.

Shellmaker Island Discovery Tour walks are now being given also. See Science Center.

Friends Tours (October - March)

Tours take place every 2nd Saturday of the month, October through March. Observe the birds on Tern Island from the Vista Point lookout at the corner of Eastbluff and Back Bay Drive. Then join a naturalist who will escort you between outdoor "classrooms" set up along Back Bay Drive, where you will learn about different aspects of the Bay, its history and ecology. Tours depart from the lookout every 15 minutes from 9:00 until 10:15am. Bring sun protection and binoculars if you have them. No reservations required. This tour is free.
