School Programs - Grades 3, 4 and 6
These programs are currently on hold.
Shellmaker Island is the perfect setting for a truly
remarkable outdoor learning experience that ties together so many of
the various facets of the Science and History/Social Science
curriculum. Shellmaker sits at the dividing line between the
waterfront homes and yachts of Lower Newport Bay and the natural
beauty of the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve.
Each grade-specific program is an intensive 1½ hour outdoor
program designed to allow students to allow students to experience
the wonders of nature while covering core materials of the
California State Board Education Standards for that grade.
Shellmaker School Tours are conducted by trained volunteer
naturalists on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:00 until 11:30
AM. Children rotate between four outdoor stations at which they
learn about different aspects of the bay as related to the
curriculum for their grade. Each school group is divided into
sub-groups of approximately 15 students. Each sub-group is assigned
to a tour guide who teaches the students how to explore nature
through observation and interpretation at each of the following
stations:
- Ecology/Plant Station
- Geography/History Station
- Bird Station
- Marine Life Station.
All of the stations incorporate exciting hands-on activities that
reinforce the materials taught. For instance, at the nursery
alongside the Ecology/Plant Station, students can
touch and smell cultivated native plants. A complete
description of the program at each grade, and an item-by-item
definition of how it is integrated into the State curriculum for the
grade, is given in the following pdf files that can be viewed in
Adobe Acrobat. Please click on the grade to download. Programs
are currently being revised to take advantage of the recent opening
of the new Back Bay Science Center. Send email to joe.naturalist@rdmd.ocgov.com
to be notified when
revised programs are offered.
