California Coastal Commission School Programs:

Upper Newport Bay Curriculum Guide

The California Coastal Commission (CCC) has developed a curriculum for high school students specific to your local resource, Upper Newport Bay (UNB).

This guide includes easy to implement, hands-on activities for the classroom that will emphasize the ecology of UNB; the effects of urbanization and pollution, non-native plant invasions and loss of biodiversity. Through these activities students will learn the importance of community-based restoration and stewardship.

The applicable state science content standards met in each activity are clearly addressed. Activities are designed to compliment UNB field trip curricula. In-class presentations will also be available. Teachers interested in piloting this program should contact the CCC office:

(949) 640-0286 or e-mail- myurko@coastal.ca.gov.

Field Days for Grades 9-12

The California Coastal Commission invites you to join our restoration team on Wednesday mornings. Help us plant native plants, remove exotics, and monitor chemical and biological characteristics at restoration sites.

High School students get involved in bringing to, and teaching about bay life at grammar schools. We use the shark mobile for this adventure.
