Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay

Sea Rocket  (Cakile maritimus)
Plant: Smooth skinned succulent annual with prostrate spreading stems branching from the base.
Flowers: Small petals about 1/2 inch across are pink to purplish.
Fruit: A swollen two-jointed pod. Upper part of pod breaks off when ripe spreading the seed.  Lower half stays attached to parent and reproduces at he same location.
Leaf: Deeply parted into oblong lobes with rounded tips. They are 1-1/2 to 3 inches long.
Flowering period:   March to October
