Some Common Plants of Upper Newport Bay
Brazilian Pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius)
Plant: Native tree of Brazil that grows to 40 feet.  Rapid spreading tree that has become a nuisance at Upper Newport Bay.  Very invasive.  Common.
Flower:  Small greenish-yellow, inconspicuous.
Leaf: Green compound leaves with smooth edges.  Smell of turpentine when crushed.
Berries: Small red, conspicuous in winter. 
Flowering period:   September to October
