Ocean Discovery Day, June 2000

The 2nd annual Upper Newport Bay Ocean Discovery Day celebration took place on Saturday, June 10 at Shellmaker Island. Nearly 700 visitors attended and enjoyed a variety of environmental exhibits and nature craft booths. Children were able to touch rays and sharks, make paper fish and do many other things.

Pontoon boat trips left from the Shellmaker dock throughout the day. These trips gave visitors the opportunity to experience the beauty of Upper Newport Bay and learn about the ecological importance of the Bay. There was also a special ceremony honoring Charles Mitchell of MBC Environmental Sciences - a man who has studied the marine environment for nearly 50 years.

Many thanks to all the participants, as well as the numerous volunteers who worked tirelessly to produce another successful event at the Bay!
