Volunteer Naturalists belonging to the Newport Bay Naturalists &
Friends lead nature tours of Upper Newport Bay on behalf of the
California Department of Fish and Game, California Coastal
Commission and Orange County Parks. These tours include life-science
field trips for elementary and high school students, activity
programs for boy and girl scouts, and kayak, canoe, electric boat
and walking tours for families and adults. Naturalists also
provide outreach to the community, conducting in-school programs and
hosting education booths at fairs and festivals. |
 |
In order to be qualified to educate the public about the history and
ecology of the Bay, tour guides complete a 50-hour Naturalist
Training Program. Classroom training sessions are held Thursday
evenings and field training sessions are held Saturday mornings over
a period of ten weeks from October to December. Training topics
range from bird and plant identification to interpretive techniques.
Completion of the one-day Associate Training
and commitment to a specific Education Program are
pre-requisites for admission to the Naturalist Training Program. For
information on the Naturalist and Associate Training Programs,
please contact Rita McCoy at (949) 923-2296.
