Interpretive Center Grand Opening, October 2000

The Peter & Mary Muth Interpretive Center was officially opened by Supervisor Tom Wilson on Saturday, October 14, 2000. Guests of honor were Fran and Frank Robinson who 30 years ago galvanized the community to save Upper Newport Bay from development, and Peter and Mary Muth whose very generous donation provided the seed money to turn the dream of an Interpretive Center into a reality.

About 300 people attended the opening ceremony on Saturday morning and nearly 1,000 people toured the Interpretive Center during the course of the day. Those attending the opening ceremony were able to enjoy continental breakfast while admiring an idyllic panoramic view of the Bay.

Three California brown pelicans that had been rehabilitated by the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange were released back into the wild as part of the celebration. Tom Fox (a NBN&F Volunteer Naturalist), Jay Robinson (son of Fran and Frank Robinson), and Grace Yick (County Ranger) assisted in the release.

Thank you to all those who worked so hard to make the opening a success.
