UPPER NEWPORT BAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Position:

Field Monitor

Latest Info:

In the past Naturalists have participated in various projects such as counting clapper rails and least terns, conducting recreational use surveys and taking water samples for water quality analysis.

One exciting monitoring project that is in the “design” phase is a long-term project being spearheaded by Peter Ridley in support of the ROOTS and Second Sundays restoration work. Monthly wildlife (birds, insects, etc.) surveys will be performed at select sites to monitor populations over time as degraded/non-native habitat is replaced with native habitat and the native habitat matures. If you are interested in being involved in test surveys to help refine the survey protocols, let Peter (ridleypa@aol.com  (949) 760-3910) or Roger know. The intent is to start the official wildlife surveys in the fall. Volunteers will be needed to perform wildlife ID, to assist by recording data, to help compile reports from the raw data, and to set up of new survey locations.

Moving forward we would like to do a better job of matching up researchers needing volunteers to help with such projects, and volunteers that would love to get involved, if only they knew about the opportunities. To do that ideally we need a Field Monitor Matchmaker to keep track of which researchers are looking for volunteers for what and when, help decide whether we can support the need based on the type/extent of the commitment, and update this page on an ongoing basis. Please contact Roger if you are interested.

Please also contact Roger if you are or know of a researcher who has an upcoming project needing field monitors.

As this concept evolves, check back frequently for latest project needs.
