Job Description:

Act as docent on one or more of the following tours:

1st Saturday Shellmaker Discovery Tour at the BBSC. Talk about Shellmaker Island's rich history; point out unusual and endangered plants, birds and crab habitats and show the indoor and outdoor aquaria.

Winter 2nd Saturday Friends Tour at the Vista Point. Escort participants between outdoor "classrooms" set up along Back Bay Drive, where they will learn about different aspects of the Bay, its history and ecology from topic experts. Provide general information about the Bay as you walk. (See also job posting for Friends Tour Station Expert.)

Summer 2nd Saturday Bayview Walk. These walks spotlight community-based restoration efforts around the Bay with a visit to the Bayview Restoration Demonstration Site. And they include a close-up look at San Diego Creek as it enters the Bay.

3rd Saturday Nature Interpretation. Guide tour participants around the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center showing them the interactive exhibits to help “interpret” or explain how estuaries and other wetlands function and why they are teeming with plant and animal life. Then take them through the butterfly garden and up onto the roof for awesome views of the Bay.

Fourth Saturday Big Canyon Expedition. Lead participants on a nature expedition that is less than a mile long yet covers six distinct habitats each with their characteristic bird and other species. The City of Newport Beach is undertaking a major restoration of Big Canyon that will involve moving the freshwater pond and extending the tidal salt marsh inland. Talk about these exciting plans too.

Job Expectations:

Make a commitment to become a Walking Tour Docent and conduct one tour every other month for at least 12 months.
