Job Description:

There are two main school programs that we offer:

The first is for elementary school students at the BBSC. These “Shellmaker School Tours” were started in the early 1990’s but placed on hold during the construction of the new BBSC at the start of the 2006/7 school year. Once all of the trailers have been removed from the island, and the May 31 Open House has come and gone we will be discussing how to incorporate these programs into the BBSC programs that will be offered for the 2008/9 school year. Stay tuned.

The second is for high school students at the Newport Aquatic Center. The primary attraction of these programs is the outrigger canoe tour – see Water Tour Docent job listing. However, because of the limitation on the number of students that can be out on the water at one time, if a full busload of 60 students attends, we do water and land components in parallel and then swap over the students. This job listing (School Tour Docent) addresses the land portion only. Naturalists may be both land and water docents if they choose. The land activities are typically chosen/conducted by the teacher from the Our Wetlands Our World (OWOW) Manual. If the teacher needs us to conduct the program we do the Explore a Wetland field study which is a guided walk in the area to the north of the Newport Aquatic Center. A detailed set of notes of where to go, what to look for, and what to talk about is provided in the School Tour Manual.

Job Expectations:

Make a commitment to become a School Tour Docent and lead one tour per month for at least 12 months.
