UPPER NEWPORT BAY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Position:

Canoe Tour Leader

Latest Info:

Prior to the construction of the new BBSC, NBNF ran canoe tours every Saturday morning and provided Naturalists to act as docents for monthly twilight canoe tours organized by the Newport Sea Base. When the canoes were moved over to the Newport Aquatic Center, the twilight tours were continued but the morning canoe tours were discontinued and replaced by kayak tours. We are now looking to start a separate NBNF twilight tour once per month starting in May to complement the twilight tour offered in conjunction with the Sea Base.

Job Description:

Scout Twilight Canoe Tours and BBQ:

These tours are organized by the Newport Sea Base. Their staff and volunteers check in participants and get the canoes launched. The Sea Base provides chase boats to assist any participants who get into difficulty. Leaders give them orientation to paddling before taking them up into the Ecological Reserve where they talk about the birds, fish and plants found at the Bay, the importance of the Bay as an estuary, threats to the Bay and what the public can do to help protect the Bay. Leaders are welcome to stay for free BBQ at the end of the tour. Depending on total number of sign-ups, 2-4 co-leaders will typically be used.

NBNF Twilight Canoe Tours:

These tours are organized by the Naturalists. Leaders check participants in and give them orientation to paddling before taking them up into the Ecological Reserve where they talk about the birds, fish and plants found at the Bay, the importance of the Bay as an estuary, threats to the Bay and what the public can do to help protect the Bay. The Newport Aquatic Center will make available a chase boat to come out and assist if any participants get into difficulty. Dates are chosen to avoid having to paddle back against a strong tide.

Tours are mellow and low-key for leaders and participants. Don’t be concerned about not being able to identify all the birds, or knowing the answers to all the questions. Just be enthusiastic about the Bay.

Job Expectations:

Make a commitment to become a Tour Leader and co-lead one tour every other month from spring thru fall.
