The 14th Annual Earth Day celebration at Upper Newport Bay took place on Shellmaker Island
on Sunday, April 27, 2003. Roughly 1,200 visitors attended and enjoyed a variety of
environmental exhibits and nature craft booths. Electric boat tours were given throughout
the day.
The morning started with music by Common Ground. Prizes were then
presented by Sarah James of DFG to the best of the many entries in the poster contest she
organized.
The honorary chair for the event was our own President, Jack Keating. At
lunchtime awards were presented to him and to Jim Cokas and Rik Katzmeier (two other
long-time Naturalists) for their tremendous efforts. Jack and Rik are shown center and
right respectively in picture below.
In the afternoon members of the local Indian tribe, the Tongva, entertained us with
their Native American drumming and chanting.
The opportunity drawing was very successful and there were many happy winners.
