The 11th Annual Earth Day celebration at Upper
Newport Bay took place on Sunday, April 16. Over 1,000 visitors attended and enjoyed a
variety of environmental exhibits and nature craft booths - from marine touch tanks to
hand-crafted windmills.
This year's theme, THINK CLEAN, LIVE
GREEN, was exemplified by the many alternative fuel and energy booths. The Breakers, an
instrumental surf band, entertained throughout the day and their instruments were powered
by solar energy! (Courtesy of Energy Efficiency).
A special presentation honoring Dr.
and Mrs. Jack Skinner, longtime bay supporters and water quality advocates, was made. It
included proclamations commemorating their service from the City of Newport Beach and the
County Board of Supervisors.
Something new this year was the
"Bike the Back Bay" event produced by Earth Resource Foundation. The ride
culminated at the Earth Day celebration, and was a fund-raiser for four environmental
organizations, including the Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends.
All of the funds raised at earth day
go directly to the Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends, and help to maintain the
ecological reserve, as well as to support educational outreach programs. Many thanks to
all the participants, as well as the numerous volunteers who worked tirelessly to produce
another successful event at the Bay!
