It was primarily through the efforts of concerned local citizens that Upper Newport Bay was saved from development and became an Ecological Reserve and Nature Preserve. Friends are important to the Bay. You too can join the Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends and help ensure the continued protection of the Bay. Several categories of individual and family Friends Membership are available. All members receive a one-year subscription to "Tracks" (a quarterly publication containing informative articles plus a schedule of activities at the Bay). Other benefits are based on membership level. The Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends is a section 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to preserving and educating the public about Upper Newport Bay. Contributions are tax-deductible as specified in the Internal Revenue Code.

Be a Pelican. By contributing $25 or more as an individual you will be entitled to free scheduled canoe tours, 50% discount on kayak tours and 10% discount on UNB merchandise.

Be a Tern. By contributing $50 or more as a family you will be entitled to free scheduled canoe tours, 50% discount on kayak tours and 10% discount on UNB merchandise for four members of your immediate family.

Be an Egret. By contributing $100 or more you will receive the above and your choice of either a laminated color brochure "The Birds of Orange County" or a gift of equivalent value selected by the Newport Bay Naturalists and Friends.

Be an Osprey. By contributing $500 or more you will receive the above; a private walking, canoe or electric boat tour for up to eight people; and an 8 x 10 signed color photograph by renowned nature photographer Russ Kerr. Photos change annually.

Be a Heron. By contributing $1000 or more you will receive the above; two private walking, canoe or electric boat tours for up to eight people; and 11 x 14 signed color photograph by renowned nature photographer Russ Kerr. Photos change annually.
