| The
temporary Back Bay Science Center includes a dock, outdoor holding
tanks used for studying marine life that is caught and released , a
marine laboratory and office space. Fish and other marine creatures
are captured directly from the dock or by seines and trawls using
the Center's solar-powered electric boat and/or 17ft Boston Whaler.
Plankton tows are also performed. Rays and small sharks are often
held in the marine holding tanks and children are given the
opportunity to touch these beautiful creatures.
Inside the marine laboratory there are several aquariums in which
several different marine environments have been created, including a
coastal tide pool, a sandy bay bottom, and a bay eelgrass bed. The
aquariums contain fish and other marine creatures in their native
settings. Earlier this year a sea horse gave birth in one of the
aquariums. |

The laboratory has various state of the art equipment that allows
the tiny plankton to be observed, videotaped and displayed on an
overhead projector using one of the lab's computers. The high
magnification microscope provides close up views of blood
circulating inside fish and other wonders of marine life.
The temporary marine laboratory building has been
relocated adjacent to the temporary OC Health Care Agency Water
Quality Laboratory. There will be restricted parking and access
during the construction of the new Back Bay Science Center
which is scheduled to be completed in early 2008. Programs will be
limited during this time.
